Old Time Radio Shows Crime Does Not Pay

Crime Does Not Pay was one of many Old Time Radio where the show was a re-version of the studio production. Produced by MGM, the radio show was based on the films of the same name. It wasn't for another 14 years that the films were featured in the mainstream radio shows.

A comic book adaptation of the show was released, and was quite successful with readers also. By the 1950s crime dramas kept the public interested, and the same can be said for dramas of today.

Crime Does Not Pay was very much like the Old Time Radio show Gangbusters. Both prominently mentioned the apprehension of the suspect/criminal. Each episode ended with messages about how wrong it is to break the law.

Around 1950, WMGM broadcast the show in New York. It aired one more year on the Mutual network in 1952. Mondays was crime drama day for many people.

The show moved from airing on Monday evenings to Wednesday nights. Most episodes were actually those that aired in repeats. The final year of the show was just pre-recorded shows and nothing more.

The show was transcribed and included sound effects that were loaded up in to a system ready to play, however many long-time fans of the show did not like this change. However, it had a brief but successful run.

Many of the MGM B-movie stars actually became top-flight stars of the radio show. From time to time a major star would drop by and play a guest role for the series. Lionel Stander as well as other actors guest starred.

The aim of Crime Does Not Pay is that it always had a message to pass on. Crimes featured in the show, including racketeering, were frequently mentioned, and equally so, the penalty of such things was also mentioned.

Often the crimes reflected real stories ripped from the headlines. The episode "baby of the Crime" made reference to the Lindbergh baby case. This mirroring of major news stories made the series even more intriguing.

The main difference with this show of course is that the bad guy always ended up locked up. After all, crime does not pay!
